Kimiko Ishizaka

St. John's Smith Square, Smith Square, London

Die Kunst der Fuge (The Art of the Fugue) BWV 1080

The pianist who undertakes performing Bach’s final masterpiece, Art of the Fugue, not only braves one of the most challenging and intense keyboard works of all time, but also confronts the ultimate tragedy of music history; that Bach died before finishing his most ambitious work. For centuries, pianists have pondered what Bach had in mind when he began the final triple fugue based on the musical spelling of his name: B-A-C-H. Pianist Kimiko Ishizaka will present a new interpretation of this work, complete with her own composition of the final triple fugue.

Composer and critic Robert Hugill describes the interpretation as “powerful and strongly vivid ... remarkably engaging, flowing beautifully”

Kimiko Ishizaka’s Art of the Fugue is the third major Bach project that she has undertaken. Previous ventures include her recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (2012), and The Well-Tempered Clavier (2015), which have received overwhelming critical praise from reviewers around the world, including Gramophone Magazine and American Records Journal.

There will be a pre-concert talk with Robert Hugill at 6.30pm.

Kimiko Ishizaka plays Chopin on the Pleyel at The Miraverse

The Miraverse at Manifold Recording, Pittsboro, NC

Kimiko Ishizaka to perform a Chopin Recital on the Pleyel piano from the Kenan collection, in the Manifold Studio.

"There are certain times when I feel more inspired, filled with a strong power that forces me to listen to my inner voice, and when I feel more need than ever for a Pleyel piano." - F. Chopin

The Pleyel Piano from the Kenan collection of UNC Chapel Hill is a historical treasure, directly linking the North Carolina music scene to the 19th century salons of Paris, France, where the likes of Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin were defining the art of piano playing. This instrument, immaculately refurbished in 2015 to adhere to the strictest historical standards, was played on by no other than Chopin himself.

Kimiko Ishizaka, the pianist behind the Open Goldberg Variations and Open Well-Tempered Clavier, will be touring Europe and North America presenting a recital of Chopin’s music, the highlight of which are the 24 Preludes, Op. 28. Her performance at the Manifold Recording Studio is the final performance on this tour, and it will be recorded in high definition audio and ultra-high definition video in order to create a lasting archive of the special sound of this instrument.

Chopin dedicated the 24 Preludes to Camille Pleyel, piano maker and owner of Salle Pleyel in Paris, at the time Chopin lived there. To play the Chopin Preludes on the Pleyel piano from the Kenan collection is to reach back in time and come as close as possible in this modern age to experiencing Chopin’s music as he himself heard it. In this case, on a piano that Chopin himself played, built by the man to whom these pieces were dedicated.
